Vitamin D - usually it may be more

A good supply of vitamin D to the body is essential for the prophylaxis and therapy of many diseases.

What is vitamin D?

A vitamin is a substance that cannot be produced by the organism itself and must therefore be supplied externally. However, vitamin D can be made from cholesterol if the body gets enough UVB radiation from sunlight. Like testosterone and cortisone, it belongs to the secosteroids. These are steroid-like substances. Vitamin D thus also has a hormone-like effect.

How does vitamin D deficiency develop?

In summer, on clear days, it is no problem for the skin to produce vitamin D. However, there are exceptions to this rule. For example, with increasing age, the skin can hardly convert any more vitamin D, as the strength of the skin decreases. The gut’s ability to absorb vitamin D from food also decreases. In winter, starting around October, vitamin D levels usually drop by about 20-30% each month.

Then in February or March it has reached a low. Getting enough vitamin D from food is next to impossible. Very large amounts of fish, dairy products or mushrooms would be needed to be well supplied. The solution to this is vitamin D preparations, for example a mixture of vital mushrooms and plant-based vitamin D3.

What does the body need vitamin D for and what does vitamin D deficiency lead to?

Vitamin D deficiency may be associated with frequent bone fractures, asthma, type I diabetes, and recurrent infections. Vitamin D is especially important for pregnant women and children. In addition, vitamin D is involved in the regulation of many hormonal mechanisms. For example, it participates in cell division, cell repair mechanisms, the release of insulin and thyroid hormones.
