Cure skin diseases naturally

May 24, 2022
Dipl.-Biol. Dorothee Ogroske et al.

Skin diseases can have very different causes. However, these never lie alone on our body surface. With neurodermatitis, psoriasis, warts and other diseases whose symptoms are manifested in changes in the appearance of the skin, imbalances in our body always play a role. Vital mushrooms help to balance exactly these imbalances.

Learn here how medicinal mushrooms naturally strengthen our organism and thus also alleviate skin diseases.

Our skin - the multi-layered protective shield

The skin is the largest organ of the human body. It can weigh between three and ten kilograms. In the embryo, the skin and the nervous system develop from the same plant. This could explain, among other mechansims, the close connection between our psyche and our skin. Scientists have explicitly picked up on this dependency in the disease name “neurodermatitis”. “Neuro” stands for the nerves and “Dermitis” for the skin. Shot of naked legs of young woman embracing them with her arms while sitting. As our outer shell, the skin has several tasks to perform. In the process, it is exposed to influences both inside and outside the body. It keeps out UV rays and forms a protective shield against the temperatures prevailing in the environment. It also repels pathogens and serves as a buffer in the event of accidents. The skin also contains various sensors that allow us to feel our surroundings: We feel heat, cold, pain and can touch things. Finally, our skin also fulfills functions in the context of metabolism: it forms vitamin D and can store fat as well as water or salt.

Structure of the skin

Roughly speaking, we distinguish between epidermis, dermis and hypodermis.

Graphic representation of the three main layers of the skin

The epidermis consists of the horny layer with underlying germ layer. As the name suggests, the horny layer consists of horny cells that intercept the coarsest influences from the environment. The germ layer provides replenishment, so that the horny layer is completely renewed about every four weeks. The germinal layer, in turn, is divided into the so-called basal and prickle cell layers.

The dermis is a layer of connective tissue. It provides elasticity, but is clearly subject to aging processes in this function. Blood and lymph vessels as well as nerve fibers run in the dermis. In addition, the hair follicles, sebaceous and sweat glands are located here.

Below the dermis lies the hypodermis. It consists of loose connective and fatty tissue. Their main functions are protection against cold and the storage of energy. It also forms the shifting layer between the outer skin and the connective tissue around the muscles.

As you can see, our skin has a very complex structure and must meet a wide variety of requirements. Now when we talk about curing skin diseases naturally, the focus must always be on external as well as internal influencing factors. Only then can we do justice to the complexity of our skin and its problems.

What do skin diseases look like?

Due to the large number of skin diseases, a blanket symptom description is impossible. The only universal fact is that a disease of the skin is always accompanied by a change. Thus, the appearance and structure can suddenly be different. New sensations such as burning, itching or pain are also possible. Other typical manifestations are pustules, wheals, redness, vesicles and scales. While some skin diseases, such as skin cancer, are localized, others can extend over large areas or even the entire body. With regard to the occurrence of symptoms, a distinction must be made between diseases that run chronically and those that come in episodes. In the latter, there can always be phases of complete freedom from symptoms.

How do skin diseases develop?

As varied as skin diseases are, so are their triggers. Here we give you a rough overview of the factors that are relevant for the well-being of the skin.

Toxin exposure and liver health

In front of the torso of a female person you can see the 3D illustration of a liver. The woman holds her hands protectively over and under this liverOur organism is confronted with toxins on a daily basis. We ingest them through our food, for example. Metabolic processes can also produce toxins, which the body then has to render harmless and eliminate. Some diseases in the area of the skin indicate that the body can no longer “keep up” with detoxification. When the usual excretory pathways via the intestines and kidneys are overloaded, a kind of “emergency detoxification” takes place via the skin. This explains the close connection between liver and skin health: if the liver, as the central detoxification organ, is in bad shape, the skin also suffers from toxin overload. Here, the vital mushroom Reishi can be a good help. In fact, it protects the liver and helps it detoxify.

Detoxification via kidneys and lymph

The kidneys are responsible for the excretion of water-soluble toxins. If the kidneys are diseased or overloaded, not all urinary substances are excreted in full. In this case, the body tries to release the toxins to the outside through the skin, which in turn can lead to symptoms such as redness, itching or pimples. In addition to the formation of urine, the kidneys are also responsible for the regulation of the acid-base balance. If they cannot fulfill this task, hyperacidity occurs. This also shows up in some people in the form of changes in the appearance of the skin. Mycotherapists prefer to administer the vital mushroom Cordyceps to strengthen the kidneys. The lymphatic system is also of central importance in detoxification. It removes toxins from various parts of the body and delivers them to the central detoxification organs. If the lymph flow comes to a standstill, the elimination process slows down. At worst, congestion occurs in the lymphatic system. The vital mushroom Polyporus can help here. It stimulates lymphatic flow and drainage, preventing congestion.

Intestine and skin health

Close up of slim woman pointing at her naked bellyIn the liver, harmful substances are processed and released into the intestines via the kidneys or together with the bile. This must now eliminate the bound toxins. If digestion is sluggish or there are other problems in the intestines, detoxification also comes to a standstill. This in turn can have a negative effect on the skin. But toxins also damage the intestinal flora and attack the mucous membranes. As a result, allergens, germs and harmful metabolic products can pass through the intestinal wall into the organism and cause autoimmune diseases (e.g. food allergies) and inflammation. Among the vital mushrooms, it is above all Hericium and Pleurotus that support intestinal health and thus counteract such problems.

Deficient immune defense in skin diseases

Certain diseases that appear only or also on the skin are directly caused by microbial pathogens. These include, for example, herpes simplex and herpes zoster, measles or warts. Like all infectious diseases, infectious skin diseases often break out when the body’s own defenses cannot adequately fight them. Such an inadequate immune defense also opens the door to skin fungi. In addition, a weak immune system is less likely to recognize cancer cells, increasing the risk of tumors.

In chronic infections, chronic inflammations as well as allergies, there are usually excessive numbers of TH2 cells. This is problematic because the many TH2 cells then also react to things that are actually harmless, such as food components. On the other hand, the simultaneous lack of TH1 cells carries an increased risk of cancer, since this part of the immune system is responsible for eliminating degenerate cells. Thus, it is central for skin health to establish a balance between the TH1 and TH2 systems. In this context, among other things, the medicinal mushroom Coriolus has proven to be good.

Other factors

In addition to the above-mentioned points, there are other factors that promote symptoms on the skin. Within the body, these include:

  • Food intolerances
  • negative stress
  • mental states of tension
  • Hormone fluctuations
  • Detoxification deficits.

Similarly, environmental conditions can favor the occurrence of skin diseases. Burdensome are, for example:

  • Air pollution
  • UV rays
  • dry heating air
  • dehydrating detergents and cleaning agents
  • certain cosmetics
  • some medications.

What are the skin diseases?

Dermatologists also refer to neurodermatitis as atopic / endogenous eczema or atopic dermatitis. The term “atopic” refers to the disease group of allergies. Affected individuals also often suffer from hay fever, asthma and food allergies. Close up of baby face with clear signs of neurodermatitisOverall, neurodermatitis affects significantly more children than adults in industrialized countries. For the last decades, statistics also indicate a strong spread of the skin disease. In 1960, for example, around 4% of children in the “Western world” suffered from neurodermatitis. Today it is between 15 and 20 %! Among adults, the prevalence currently varies between about 2 and 8%. Typical symptoms of neurodermatitis are dry, itchy patches of skin that become easily inflamed. In addition, a typical sign in infants is cradle cap. Basically, the skin on the entire body can be affected. However, this skin disease is most frequently seen on the elbows, back of the knees, and face. Typical is a phased occurrence of the symptoms. Triggers for a new flare-up can be certain foods or allergens. It is also often environmental stimuli such as poor air quality, high humidity, synthetic and / or tight clothing, and hot baths or showers. In addition, the problem usually worsens under stress, which is associated with vasodilatation and increased release of immunoglobulin E (IgE).

How does neurodermatitis occur?

Researchers are still unable to definitively explain why someone develops neurodermatitis. What is certain is that some susceptibility is inherited. In addition, hygiene seems to play a major role, especially for children: The more they come into contact with dirt and germs, the lower their risk of falling ill. Atopic dermatitis is caused by an overreaction of the immune system in which too much IgE and histamine is released. As a result, increased inflammation occurs and the skin begins to itch. Not scratching yourself as a sufferer requires tremendous self-control. However, if the skin areas are scratched open, the symptoms worsen: inflammations spread and infections occur. In addition to an imbalance of the immune system, the salt content of the skin is often too high in neurodermatitis. This disrupts the natural skin flora, making the skin barrier more permeable and thus more susceptible to environmental stimuli.

Can neurodermatitis be cured naturally?

Because this skin condition varies widely in its symptoms, courses, and triggers, there is no blanket treatment plan. Rather, it is necessary to combine some general principles of lifestyle and especially nutrition with individually helpful measures. Reishi, Hericium and Pleurotus are suitable as vital mushrooms. These mushrooms can help improve gut health, reduce histamine issues, balance the immune system, and increase stress resistance.

Psoriasis - Psoriasis

A major difference between psoriasis and atopic dermatitis is that psoriasis causes the skin to flake, but sufferers do not necessarily experience itching. Psoriasis is an inflammatory autoimmune skin disease in which skin cells divide in excess. Instead of four weeks, the renewal of the horny layer takes only about four days. Close up of woman with psoriasis on knee and elbowA typical symptom is the silvery-white skin flakes that occur in large quantities. In addition, the skin often appears reddish in color due to inflammation and heavy blood flow. In 50 to 75% of those affected, the disease also occurs in the area of the nails. Between 5 and 20% also feel the autoimmune disease in their joints. In this case, it is essential to clarify before treatment whether it is actually psoriasis or possibly rheumatoid arthritis. Research into the causes of this skin disease, which affects about 2% of the population, is still in the dark. It is clear that there is a dysbalance of the immune system. The main factor in type 1 psoriasis is probably a genetic predisposition. This type is characterized by the fact that it occurs before the age of 40. In type 2, which does not occur until later in life, the causes are completely unclear. Both types have in common that the symptoms occur in episodes. The first outbreak as well as the individual relapses are usually preceded by a triggering event. These can be, for example:
  • Infections (mostly type 1 streptococci)
  • Trauma, stress
  • Medications such as beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, lithium, NSAIDs.
  • Smoking, alcohol
  • Hormone fluctuations
  • Leaky Gut
  • Dysbiosis
  • Malnutrition, obesity, metabolic syndrome

LPS and psoriasis

In connection with the last two points, recent research has produced interesting results. Thus, high levels of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) appear to be associated with the occurrence of psoriasis. LPS are produced by bacteria that are found in low levels in a healthy intestinal environment. If the intestinal flora gets out of balance, these “bad” bacteria take over and produce an excess of LPS. So, to cure or manage psoriasis naturally, taking care of your gut health is essential.

Measures for psoriasis

Especially against a high LPS level, but also to alleviate the autoimmune symptoms of psoriasis in general, the diet should be as natural as possible and rich in fiber. In addition to fumaric acid and ciclosporin A, vital mushrooms have repeatedly been shown to be helpful. Recommended here are, for example, Reishi, Hericium, Cordyceps, ABM, Chaga, Shiitake and Maitake. A lot of exercise and a low stress level also have a favorable effect. In order to cure psoriasis naturally, light, climatic therapy, salt as a bath additive and urea preparations against itching have proven effective in external treatment. You can also use salicylic acid to promote the shedding of dandruff.

Close up of face of young woman with acne pustulesSince 70 to 80 % of all adolescents suffer from acne, the skin disease is primarily known as a phenomenon during puberty. The main reason for this is hormonal changes. However, acne is the most common skin disease worldwide and can also affect adults. In addition to hormonal fluctuations, certain cosmetics, chlorine and medications are possible triggers. Typical signs are pustules, pimples and blackheads. These spread mainly on the face, but can also appear on other parts of the body. Often the vital mushrooms Polyporus, Reishi or for adults Maitake are recommended for acne.

Rosacea - Copper Rose

The so-called “rosacea” is a chronic inflammatory disease of the facial skin. Redness, dry skin with itching and burning to blisters and bulbous growths occur. The disease progresses in relapses. The causes are also still largely unclear. In addition to a genetic predisposition, dermatologists assume an imbalance of the immune and nervous systems. Bacteria may also play a role.

Skin cancer

Skin cancer is the term used for all types of cancer that appear in the skin area. While black skin cancer – also called melanoma – is the most dangerous form, white skin cancer is the most common variety. Depending on the origin of the degenerated cells, scientists distinguish between basal cell carcinoma and prickle cell carcinoma. Both occur primarily in those areas that are frequently exposed to the sun. There are also other types of skin cancer, such as sarcomas or Paget’s disease. In principle, our immune system is capable of recognizing degenerate cancer cells and rendering them harmless. However, if the body’s defenses are not strong enough, tumors can grow unhindered.

Which skin diseases are infectious?

There are infectious diseases that bring a change in the appearance of the skin as a symptom. These include measles and rubella, for example. Other infections are manifested exclusively by skin lesions. For example, warts. These are benign growths that are usually produced by viruses such as the human papillomavirus (HPV). These growths take on different shapes, from which the descriptive names such as dell, flat, stalk or thorn warts are derived. Close-up of the lower half of the face of a young woman with herpes blisters around her mouth. She bashfully holds her hand in front of itAlso known for symptoms on the skin is the group of herpes viruses. They include, for example, herpes simplex type 1, the so-called “cold sore”. Another herpes virus, the varicella zoster virus, causes chickenpox and shingles, respectively. Finally, fungal diseases are also contagious. A typical example is athlete’s foot. It is accompanied by unpleasant itching, skin flaking, blisters and sometimes oozing. It finds the ideal breeding ground in a warm and humid environment. In addition, it has an easy time taking hold when the acid mantle of the skin is already damaged and the immune system is weakened. As with all infectious skin diseases, it is therefore true for athlete’s foot that a strong immune system offers some protection against infection.

Allergic reactions of the skin

Unpleasant symptoms such as burning, itching and redness of the skin often stem from allergies. The cause of the skin reaction is almost always an imbalance within the immune system. In most cases, this is a so-called TH2 shift, in which increased IgE and histamine are released. Stress can additionally intensify the allergic symptoms.

What helps with skin diseases?

When it comes to naturally healing skin diseases such as neurodermatitis, psoriasis, warts or shingles, internal and external factors must always be considered. A healthy diet combined with the right vital mushrooms ensures the balance of the intestines, immune system, metabolism and hormones. For external care creams, we recommend that you always use organic quality. Depending on skin type and need, either moisturizing or fat-containing creams or ointments are suitable as a basis. For example, St. John’s wort, almond or olive oil is a natural source. Added or generally externally applied vital mushroom powder additionally soothes itching, calms the skin, promotes wound healing and prevents infections.

Treat skin diseases with vital mushrooms

Due to their ingredients, vital mushrooms achieve many beneficial effects in our organism, which, among other things, are also beneficial to skin health. Thus, they stimulate detoxification processes and have a positive influence on the intestinal flora. Due to their prebiotic properties, they promote the proliferation of good bacteria such as lactobacilli, enterococci and bifidobacteria. This also benefits the metabolism, which also benefits from the regulation of fat metabolism and blood sugar. In fact, many vital mushrooms have a beneficial effect on insulin balance and cholesterol levels.

Vital mushrooms directly strengthen the immune system and balance it in case of imbalance. Allergies and autoimmune diseases are thus attenuated. So-called triterpenes are also found in vital mushrooms. These are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. Another relief for the immune system is the antioxidant potential of medicinal mushrooms. Damage caused by free radicals decreases due to their intake. Among other things, this means a certain protection against tumors. Some vital mushrooms such as Hericium and Reishi have additionally shown to somewhat buffer the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy and possibly even increase the efficiency of the therapies.

Below we have summarized the most important vital mushrooms against skin diseases for you in an overview. In addition to the mushrooms mentioned above, shiitake, maitake or agaricus bisporus can also be a useful addition to mycotherapeutic treatment, depending on the individual problem. Agaricus bisporus is a good choice especially for acne, as it can intercept excessive sebum production of the skin already at the level of hormones.

Before deciding on a particular mushroom powder, please always consult our experts! Every person is different. To cure skin diseases naturally, it is always necessary to consider more variables than just the nature of the disease itself.

Image of reishi mushroom on white backgroundAs a liver mushroom, the Reishi promotes first and foremost the detoxification of the body via the liver. All toxins that are discharged via the liver and intestines no longer represent a burden for the skin. In addition, Reishi is also considered a benefactor of the intestine: it promotes healthy intestinal flora and, in particular, inhibits the spread of such bacteria that produce LPS. It also supports the health of the intestinal mucosa, which even counteracts problems typical of a leaky gut.

The polysaccharides contained in the Reishi support the immune system. In this context, they are considered immunomodulatory, i.e. they establish a balance between the TH1 and TH2 systems. In addition, it is considered a so-called “immune trainer” and supports the defense, for example, against viruses.

Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory as well as anti-allergic properties of Reishi should be mentioned. The triterpenes contained in it reduce the release of histamine, which reduces symptoms such as itching. Not to be despised are the harmonizing influences of the vital mushroom on the vegetative nervous system as well as the hormonal balance. Taking Reishi improves the quality of sleep, while the experience of stress decreases significantly. Especially in the case of nervous skin diseases such as neurodermatitis, this brings noticeable relief. In an observational study of children and adults suffering from atopic dermatitis, 80% of those affected showed good improvement in symptoms within three months by taking Reishi alone.

By the way, the use of the medicinal mushroom Reishi has proven itself again and again in the past for animals with skin problems.

Hericium is considered one of the most versatile vital mushrooms to cure skin diseases naturally. Since it targets the gut-brain-skin axis, it helps with any skin symptoms related to problems in the gut. The reason for this is mainly the erinacins it contains. They protect the intestinal mucosa and support its regeneration after damage. Image of sliced Hericium mushroom on white backgroundThus, the vital mushroom prevents allergens, toxins or even microorganisms from the intestinal tract from entering the body. At the same time, it also promotes intestinal flora. It stimulates the proliferation of bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids. The body needs these in particular for its nerve fibers. The intake of Hericium is always recommended in cases of dysbiosis and following antibiotic therapy to strengthen the intestinal environment and thus also prevent skin diseases.

With regard to the immune system, intestinal health is by no means irrelevant. The majority of immune cells are formed in the intestinal tract. For example, the so-called Peyer’s plaques are located in the intestinal mucosa. These are lymphoid follicles that play an important role in immune defense. Overall, Hericium also supports the immune system and even improves the defense against tumor cells.

By the way, among others, the above-mentioned erinacins also have a relaxing effect on the psyche. That is why the intake of Hericium has been proven not only for neurodermatitis, but also for restlessness, anxiety and sleep disorders.

The main area of action of this vital mushroom is in the area of the kidneys. Thus, it promotes their health and helps them detoxify. You can see three dried cordyceps mushrooms on white backgroundResearchers consider cordycepin to be the most important substance here. Studies have shown that during the intake of cordyceps the levels of urinary substances such as urea, uric acid and creatinine decrease. If you suffer from edema, you should seek advice on a combination of Cordyceps and Polyporus.

Cordyceps also exerts a positive influence on the adrenal cortex and the endocrine system in general, resulting in relief of stress symptoms, burnout and depression. As a result, stress-related symptoms in the skin area also decrease.

Polyporus is also an important vital mushroom when it comes to toxin elimination. Due to its diuretic effect, it is also used in hypertension. Unlike other drainage medications, its use does not flush out large amounts of potassium. Due to its antioxidants, polyporus also protects the kidneys from damage caused by oxygen free radicals.

Dried polyporus mushroom on white backgroundAs a vital mushroom that gets things “flowing,” polyporus promotes yet another important detoxification agency in the body: the lymphatic system. By stimulating the flow of lymph, it prevents congestion. These are particularly fatal for the skin, because when the lymph is stagnant, the only way out is through the skin to remove harmful substances. The positive influence on the lymph has proved particularly useful for people who, for example, have congestion due to venous weakness.

In combination with the vital mushroom Reishi, Polyporus is considered an ideal natural remedy for acne. The antibiotic, anti-inflammatory as well as detoxifying properties intertwine perfectly in this skin disease.

Due to its positive influence on the immune system, Coriolus is primarily used for skin diseases that are associated with deficient or unbalanced defenses. Close up of vital mushroom Coriolus versicolor on white backgroundWith its ingredients, it can efficiently counteract a TH2 dominance by stimulating a higher activity of natural killer cells and an increased production of messenger substances from TH1 cells. Its use has been proven in chronic viral infections as well as in inflammations and allergies. In addition, it protects to some extent against new infections, but also accelerates the regeneration after an infection. Possible symptoms in the area of the skin thus subside more quickly. Promising studies have been conducted, for example, on diseases caused by herpes simplex and Epstein Barr viruses. By the way, despite its stimulating properties, Coriolus can also be taken for autoimmune-related diseases!

In the field of cancer, positive effects can be shown again and again by taking Coriolus. It promotes the defense of cancer cells, improves the general condition of patients and reduces the side effects of radiotherapy.

The medicinal mushroom Agaricus blazei murrill (ABM) is also used to treat skin cancer. Close up of freshly harvested Agaricus blazei murrill (ABM) mushroom on white backgroundThanks to its beta-D-glucans, glycoproteins, blazeispirol A and C and blazein, it effectively supports the treatment of tumors. For example, it promotes so-called apoptosis (the death of cancer cells), but also provides important enzymes and protects the bone marrow. It also promotes the immune response, which is directed against degenerated or infected cells.

As an adaptogen, ABM is able to strengthen in general. Similar to Reishi, it can also relieve allergic reactions of the skin. It has a balancing effect on the immune system, which makes the onset of autoimmune diseases less likely. Since it also inhibits the release of histamine, it reduces immediate allergic skin symptoms. Furthermore, its strong antioxidant abilities and its protective influence on the liver should be mentioned.

Pieces of chaga, a birch leaf and mushroom powder on white backgroundEspecially for allergic reactions of the skin, but also for psoriasis, neurodermatitis, acne and dry-scaly areas, the Chaga has proven itself many times. One reason is probably hidden in its inotodiol ingredient, which acts directly on the mast cells and reduces the release of histamine here. In laboratory studies on mice, its administration significantly alleviated the symptoms of food allergy.

In addition, the Chaga has antiviral and immune-boosting effects. The inotodiol can even prevent infection with herpes simplex to some extent.

How do I decide on the right mushroom preparation?

The most important quality criterion for vital mushrooms is organic quality. Only when cultivated under conditions such as those specified by the German organic guidelines can freedom from harmful substances be guaranteed. Fungi literally attract environmental toxins. Therefore, with conventionally cultivated vital mushrooms, you would always ingest toxins.

Mushroom powder capsules on a wooden spoon, which lies on a rustic wooden base. Next to the spoon are dried Reishi piecesFurthermore, the mushrooms should have been dried gently – i.e. at a maximum of 40° Celsius. Higher temperatures destroy important enzymes, whose health-promoting effect is thus irrevocably lost.

Finally, capsules filled with the powder from the dried mushrooms have proven to be an ideal dosage form. The cover protects the powder from moisture and thus from mold. This is difficult to see on the fine mushroom powder with the naked eye. Capsules are also very convenient in terms of dosage.

How do I properly take vital mushrooms for skin diseases?

As you can see from our text, different vital mushrooms are suitable depending on the skin disease. However, different medicinal mushrooms can also be useful for two people suffering from the same skin disease. The reason for this is, for example, the general constitution of the persons as well as possible further health problems. Since all the determining factors are difficult for a layman to keep track of, it is definitely advisable to consult a mycotherapist. Our experts will also be happy to advise you in detail about the respective vital mushrooms in connection with your specific skin disease.

Another critical factor is dosage. Here, too, it is not possible to make any general statements. Basically, the vital mushrooms should be sneaked in. This means that the dosage is initially very low and is only increased over time. Although medicinal mushrooms do not have side effects in the true sense, a kind of initial worsening of symptoms can occur precisely because of their detoxifying effect. Therefore, before the first intake, you should also talk to our experts about the exact dosage.
